This brings us to the second of its mechanics: elections. Certain laws will have to go through Congress, and while we start with a decent amount of support – four-sixths out of the House, no less – the most controversial laws, that is, those furthest to the left, may still need support. To begin with, our decisions are not absolute. In this way we will be managing policies that, in the case of Democratic Socialism Simulator, have a series of peculiarities that make it a game with its own personality. We begin assuming the presidency of the United States and, from there, different councilors and lobbyists will make proposals that we will have to approve, passing the letter to the right, or reject, going to the left. Getting into mechanics, the game is, essentially, a Reigns clone. That is, someone who will have to deal with all the people to our right, which means, in essence, practically the entire establishment and the American media except Chapo Trap House. The video game world has not been impervious to this phenomenon, giving us some titles clearly influenced by the current social climate, even if they are not strictly about what Sanders and many others like him are trying to do.Īmong those games is Democratic Socialism Simulator, a simple simulator that puts us in the chair of the US presidency as a potentially socialist and democratic president. Suddenly, one can argue about socialism in the United States, a country that, after McCarthyism, branded anything further to the left of rampant liberalism as communist. That is, a shift to the left represented in the presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.Īs is logical, many speeches have arisen around his figure, some until recently impossible. For this reason, while some continue to advocate for more market and others embrace fascism, within the democratic party a different proposal has emerged: democratic socialism. That continuing to pretend that everything will get better if we keep doing the exact same thing will get us nowhere. Climate change, the appearance of the coronavirus and that the system already seems to be living in a permanent economic crisis has made it clear that a change is necessary. The United States, like the rest of the planet, is faced with a dilemma. With good ideas and intentions, your inability to understand how the democratic game works makes you feel opaque and unfair.
